Monday 20th October is World Osteoporosis Day, and we are running a Bone Health & Strength Course during October to encourage more people to gain confidence lifting weights and improve their bone health.
Hosted by our highly experienced strength and conditioning coach, Annabel, the course will begin on Friday, 10th October, from 10:30 to 11:05 and run for four consecutive weeks.
What is osteoporosis?
According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women and one in five men aged 50 years and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture worldwide.
Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and fragile, so that they break easily – even as a result of a minor fall, a bump, a sneeze, or a sudden movement. Fractures caused by osteoporosis can be life-threatening and a major cause of pain and long-term disability.
Exercising regularly to keep your bones and muscles moving, particularly using weight-bearing, muscle-strengthening and balance-training exercises, is one of several steps you can take to improve bone health and reduce the risk of fractures.
During the Bone Health & Strength course, Annabel will provide information on osteopenia (low bone mass) and osteoporosis, and offer practical support, giving you the confidence to lift weights and complete weight-bearing exercises, which can help strengthen your bones.
